Researchers find curious link between Facebook and credit card debt

Today's story comes from the department of "What will they study next?" Researchers decided to study the effects of logging into social media, such as Facebook. The research indicates that the experience tends to raise a person's self-esteem. But the study found that a rise in self esteem may lower self-control in the areas of health and financial decision making.

Part of the conclusion of the research is that there is a link between greater social network use and two, for lack of a better term, side effects--higher body-mass index and higher credit card debt. An assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh authored the study. He says that he was surprised to find that browsing Facebook for as little as five minutes can psychologically affect people.

The researchers say that the detrimental effects to self-control only appeared when participants of the study focused on interacting electronically in the social media with people with whom the participants had close ties.

Studies seem to come out every day, and they appear to cover every topic that can be conjured up. While the recent study looked at some possible psychological effects that social networking may have, certainly credit card debt is no trivial issue for many distressed households in the Cincinnati area. Credit card debt can be a true difficult issue to overcome.

No offense to academic research is intended. Researchers can continue to look into curious subject matter to find alleged links between activities and debt. We certainly can learn much from academic research.

But, many hard working families are more concerned about putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads in tough times. When consumer debts become unmanageable, our laws allow people to find a fresh start under the bankruptcy code.

Bankruptcy is not for everyone. A Cincinnati bankruptcy lawyer can help Ohio residents understand how the bankruptcy laws work, and how they may apply in an individual situation.
