Save the Dream Ohio Scam Warning

The Ohio Attorney General's Office says that internet scammers are attempting to prey on homeowners under the guise of the foreclosure prevention initiative, "Save the Ohio Dream." Website advertisements have popped up in Ohio pretending to be associated with the government program.

The ads attempt to create confusion with homeowners who are searching the web in an effort to find state assistance in staving off foreclosure in Ohio.

The advertisements are being placed on the internet by for-profit companies in an attempt to exploit the "save the Dream" name. Save the Dream is a free program offered by the state. Homeowners that have clicked on the sites during web searches have been directed to non-government websites.

Homeowners are then inundated with offers to save their home from foreclosure, for a fee. Kimberly Zurz, director of the Ohio Department of Commerce says that after promising to save a home from foreclosure the scam artists charge a steep fee, then "do nothing to help you." She says the scammers disappear with your money.

State officials say Save the Dream Ohio's services are offered as a government program at no charge to consumers. Doug Garver, executive director of the Ohio Housing Finance Agency believes the Save the Dream Ohio program will assist 46,000 homeowners in the state who are having difficulty making their mortgage payments. He says he hopes the announcement regarding the Save the Dream scam will help homeowners to avoid the con "and connect with a trusted government resource for help."

Certainly the government program may not be able to solve mortgage difficulties for all Ohioans. As this blog has previously reported, bankruptcy relief in some cases can help homeowners facing foreclosure.
